Fact
Rob Sand opposed the tax cuts putting thousands of dollars back into Iowans' pockets, and he wants to roll them back. His agenda would cost the average Iowa family of four an estimated $7,500 every year.

Rob talks about affordability, but when major tax cuts are actually on the table, he has repeatedly lined up against them.
Rob claims
He's a moderate on abortion.
Fact
Sand has repeatedly used the formulation that life begins at breath and has a long public record opposing all abortion restrictions. The same biblical 'breath' argument appeared in his public comments years before his recent explanation of the issue.
Bottom line
Rob can call himself a moderate, but Iowa voters should judge the position by his own words: he has not identified a gestational restriction he supports, and he holds the most radical position on abortion possible.

Fact
Zach Lahn is a sixth-generation Iowan. He grew up here, played quarterback for Sioux City East, chose to come home and buy his family farm, and lives full-time in Belle Plaine today. So why Kansas? Because Zach is a dad. He has a blended family and flies to Kansas each week to pick up his children.
Bottom line
Rob Sand took a father showing up for his kids and turned it into a political attack. Zach Lahn lives in Iowa. He travels to Kansas because his children split time, and he refuses to let politics come before being their dad.

Rob Sand has repeatedly said that he believes illegal immigrants in Iowa should not be deported, and in fact should receive benefits and jobs meant for Iowans. Sand criticized Iowa for sending law enforcement to the southern border and has framed deportation around violent criminals or people who commit additional crimes after entering the country. He has also amplified arguments minimizing the existence of an immigration crisis.

Rob talks about border security, but he is an open-borders liberal, who believes illegal immigrants should have all the same rights as Iowa citizens.

Sand encouraged Iowa cities to pursue federal climate-planning money after Gov. Reynolds declined it, defended the Green New Deal during the national debate over it, promoted a 50-by-30 renewable-energy push, praised California emissions standards, and defended the Kyoto Protocol earlier in his career.
Bottom line
On energy and climate, Rob's record looks much more like the national progressive movement than an Iowa moderate.

He'll clean up Iowa's water and hold powerful corporations accountable.

Sand's campaigns have received $13 million in financial support from the Lauridsen family, whose wealth is tied to major agricultural and chemical business. Sand presents himself as the candidate who will take on powerful agricultural interests but is essentially owned by one of Iowa's largest agricultural chemical companies, while also using its fleet of private jets and attending their conferences at no charge.
Bottom line
Rob Sand wants to lecture Iowa farmers and businesses about accountability, but he's married to the industry doing the damage.

Sand himself says he expects to govern with a Republican legislature. In practice, his promise means using the governor's veto against Republican cultural priorities. He has also opposed Republican legislation on transgender issues and has publicly committed to ensuring elementary school students have access to inappropriate materials about transgender ideology and polyamorous relationships.

Rob isn't promising to end the culture war. He's promising to stop conservatives from winning policy fights he labels a culture war.
