Taxes
1/15

Rob claims

He'll make life more affordable for Iowa families.

Fact

Rob Sand opposed the tax cuts putting thousands of dollars back into Iowans' pockets, and he wants to roll them back. His agenda would cost the average Iowa family of four an estimated $7,500 every year.

Bottom line

Rob talks about affordability, but when major tax cuts are actually on the table, he has repeatedly lined up against them.

Culture
2/15

Rob claims

He's a moderate on abortion.

Fact

Sand has repeatedly used the formulation that life begins at breath and has a long public record opposing all abortion restrictions. The same biblical 'breath' argument appeared in his public comments years before his recent explanation of the issue.

Bottom line

Rob can call himself a moderate, but Iowa voters should judge the position by his own words: he has not identified a gestational restriction he supports, and he holds the most radical position on abortion possible.

Governance
3/15

Rob claims

Zach Lahn lives in Kansas.

Fact

Zach Lahn is a sixth-generation Iowan. He grew up here, played quarterback for Sioux City East, chose to come home and buy his family farm, and lives full-time in Belle Plaine today. So why Kansas? Because Zach is a dad. He has a blended family and flies to Kansas each week to pick up his children.

Bottom line

Rob Sand took a father showing up for his kids and turned it into a political attack. Zach Lahn lives in Iowa. He travels to Kansas because his children split time, and he refuses to let politics come before being their dad.

Culture
4/15

Rob claims

He doesn't support boys in girls' locker rooms and wants parents out of culture-war fights.

Fact

Sand has publicly aligned himself with keeping progressive material available to young students, including material addressing transgender identity and polyamorous family relationships.

Bottom line

Rob wants moderate language on gender issues while opposing the conservative policies designed to draw clear boundaries in schools.

Immigration
5/15

Rob claims

He supports border security and common-sense immigration enforcement.

Fact

Rob Sand has repeatedly said that he believes illegal immigrants in Iowa should not be deported, and in fact should receive benefits and jobs meant for Iowans. Sand criticized Iowa for sending law enforcement to the southern border and has framed deportation around violent criminals or people who commit additional crimes after entering the country. He has also amplified arguments minimizing the existence of an immigration crisis.

Bottom line

Rob talks about border security, but he is an open-borders liberal, who believes illegal immigrants should have all the same rights as Iowa citizens.

Guns
6/15

Rob claims

He's a gun-owning deer hunter who respects the Second Amendment.

Fact

Sand criticized Iowa's permitless-carry law, has publicly expressed support for gun control, and has defended a permitting approach that gives government officials discretion over weapons permits.

Rob Sand posts from April 2, 2021 attacking Iowa's permitless carry law and the end of the handgun purchase permit requirement.

Bottom line

Owning a hunting rifle doesn't make someone a defender of the Second Amendment. When Iowa expanded gun rights, Rob opposed it.

Governance
7/15

Rob claims

He's a political outsider.

Fact

Sand has spent virtually his entire professional career in or around government: as a government lawyer and prosecutor and then as a statewide elected official. His notable detour from that path was a brief modeling stint in Europe.

Bottom line

Rob Sand isn't an outsider. Government is his career. Politics is his profession. A modeling stint in Europe doesn't change that.

Healthcare
8/15

Rob claims

Bringing Medicaid back under direct government management will make healthcare cheaper.

Fact

Rob Sand wants to dismantle Iowa's current Medicaid system and put state government back in charge. His plan would jeopardize more than $1 billion in funding for Iowa hospitals, hitting rural hospitals and the communities that depend on them the hardest.

Bottom line

Rob's Medicaid experiment would mean less money for rural hospitals, fewer healthcare options, and more government bureaucracy between patients and their care.

Taxes
9/15

Rob claims

He's fiscally responsible and supports tax cuts when they make sense.

Fact

Sand opposed major Republican tax-cut packages and attacked SNAP reforms as connected to tax cuts for wealthy Americans. His public rhetoric says he can support tax cuts; his record gives Iowans reason to ask which major tax cut he has actually supported.

Bottom line

Rob's fiscal moderation disappears when the vote or policy gets specific.

Energy
10/15

Rob claims

He's an Iowa moderate on energy and environmental policy.

Fact

Sand encouraged Iowa cities to pursue federal climate-planning money after Gov. Reynolds declined it, defended the Green New Deal during the national debate over it, promoted a 50-by-30 renewable-energy push, praised California emissions standards, and defended the Kyoto Protocol earlier in his career.

Bottom line

On energy and climate, Rob's record looks much more like the national progressive movement than an Iowa moderate.

Agriculture
RECORD11/15

Rob claims

He'll clean up Iowa's water and hold powerful corporations accountable.

Fact

Sand's campaigns have received $13 million in financial support from the Lauridsen family, whose wealth is tied to major agricultural and chemical business. Sand presents himself as the candidate who will take on powerful agricultural interests but is essentially owned by one of Iowa's largest agricultural chemical companies, while also using its fleet of private jets and attending their conferences at no charge.

Bottom line

Rob Sand wants to lecture Iowa farmers and businesses about accountability, but he's married to the industry doing the damage.

Culture
12/15

Rob claims

He won't sign 'culture war' bills from either party.

Fact

Sand himself says he expects to govern with a Republican legislature. In practice, his promise means using the governor's veto against Republican cultural priorities. He has also opposed Republican legislation on transgender issues and has publicly committed to ensuring elementary school students have access to inappropriate materials about transgender ideology and polyamorous relationships.

Material at issue in Iowa elementary schools

Bottom line

Rob isn't promising to end the culture war. He's promising to stop conservatives from winning policy fights he labels a culture war.

Culture
DEBUNKED13/15

Rob claims

He opposes biological males competing in girls' sports.

Fact

That is a significant shift from his recent record. Sand condemned Republican legislation addressing transgender participation in girls' sports as discriminatory and amplified criticism of the policy before adopting a different posture as a candidate for governor.

Bottom line

Iowa voters deserve to know which Rob Sand would show up after Election Day: the candidate's new position or the position he defended before running for governor.

Governance
14/15

Rob claims

He's a moderate who is above party politics.

Fact

Sand's record tells a different story. He has taken liberal positions on abortion, guns, immigration, taxes, organized labor, energy, and cultural issues, and his political history includes work with Progressive Maryland.

Bottom line

The 'moderate Rob Sand' image is a campaign brand. On issue after issue, his actual record is consistently and extremely liberal.

Governance
15/15

Rob claims

He wants to disperse power from Des Moines back to Iowa counties.

Fact

His broader record points the other direction: opposition to Republican public-sector collective-bargaining reforms and support for policies that can expand government discretion over individual rights.

Bottom line

Rob's local-control message sounds good. His record raises a simpler question: when has he actually chosen less government power?
